Chauncey Dwight Clarke House (1920)

10211 Pioneer Blvd. Santa Fe Springs, CA. Now a house museum/wedding and party location. A very nice place, a rare house with some sense of the period in the suroundings. Worth a trip!

George White and Anna Gunn Marston House (1904-05)

3525 7th Ave. San Diego, CA. By Hebbard and Gill. Now a house museum adjoining Balboa park. The house is generally well maintained and is one of the best interior experiences in town. Features furnishings of the Arts & Crafts movement. Run by the San Diego Historical Society. Regular hours and the gardens and exterior are always acessable for free. The gardens (maintained by the City of San Diego) are rentable for weddings

La Jolla Women's Club (1912)

715 Silverado St. La Jolla. One of Gill's best. The exterior is in rather good shape except for an unfortunate fountain addition and some landscaping problems. Rentable for weddings, lectures etc. Occasional public craft shows, auctions etc. If you are considering a rental, the caretaker will show you the space. Call (858) 454-2354 for information. Their site (click title above) has some new pictures and detailed rental info. (ed note: My wife and I were married here before the fountain and it was quite nice. George Kautz House (1913)

aka La Jolla Bed and Breakfast Inn 7753 Draper Ave. La Jolla (next to the Women's Club) Now a bed-and-breakfast.

 

Scripps Laboratory Building (1908)

Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla. This National Register building can be entered during school hours. Extensive archives relating to this building and to previous (1905) Hebbard and Gill building that was sited at the La Jolla cove are at the archives department of the SIO library nearby.

 

Ellen Browning Scripps house (1915)

The Museum in the 1940's

aka Museum of Contemporary Art, 700 Prospect St. La Jolla.
Most of the architecture of interest to Gill fans is outside, but the museum has great art. Do visit remnants of Miss Scripps' garden in back. Hours Tuesday-Saturday 10-5pm. Wednesday until 8 pm. Sunday 12 noon-5 pm. Free on 1st Tuesday of the month. Phone (858) 454-3541 for information.

 

1st Church of Christ, Scientist of San Diego (1909)

2442 2nd Ave.(at Laurel) San Diego. Recently beautifully restored. Service 11 am Sunday, 7 pm Wednesday. Reading room open Mon-Fri 10-4. Call (619) 233-3571 for information.

 

1st Church of Christ, Scientist of Coronado (1927)

8th St. and "C" Ave. Coronado Services 10 am Sunday. Testimony service 7:30 pm on Wed. Reading room open Monday-Saturday Noon-3 pm. Call (619) 435-4383 for information. One of Gill's best surviving buildings, and a very spiritual design.

 

Church of the Sacred Heart (1919)

7th St. and "C" Ave. Coronado. Roman Catholic church by Irving and Louis Gill. Funny 1960s remaking of some parts, in part based on new Vatican rules, but don't miss the original confessional doors and the lighting system. Mass at 8 am Monday-Saturday, 5:30pm Saturday, 7:30am-9am-11am on Sunday. Call (619) 435-3167 for information.

 

Oceanside Police and Fire Building (1929)

aka Oceanside Historical Society and Fire Station. 712 Pier View way (at Nevada), Oceanside. The Historical Society is open Thursday-Saturday 10am-2pm. Call (760) 722-4786. The Fire-Station side, more interesting in the interior architecturally, is viewable when door is open. The Oceanside Museum of Art next door will be absorbing this space soon.

 

Oceanside City Hall (1934)

Now houses the Oceanside Museum of Art. 704 Pier View Way (at Ditmar). They have 5 shows a year running 6 weeks or so each. The front desk area and gift shop are often open 10am-4pm Tuesday- Saturday and 1pm-4pm on Sunday. Call (760) 721-ARTS for info.

 

La Jolla Playground Center (1914)

The Playground Building in the 1920's

aka La Jolla Recreation Center. 615 Prospect St. La Jolla. Used for dance and craft classes etc. Staff is on site 7 days, often to late hours but always 11am-2:30 pm, and they will open the building for interested visitors. Go around back to find office. Info at (858) 552-1658

 

Americanization School (1930)

Division Street at Center Ave. Oceanside. Restored. Owned by the City of Oceanside and leased to the Santa Margarita YMCA. Used for ESL classes (as when new) and Head Start program etc. Could be rented. Often ok to walk in. Call Alfredo Contreras, program Coordinator, at (760) 721-4691.

 

Electric Fountain at The Plaza (1910)

Broadway, between Third and Fourth Avenues, San Diego. Accessible 24 hours daily.

 

 

Annie B. Darst Flats (1908)

2264-2270 5th Ave (at Juniper) San Diego. Home to 2 hair styling establishments.

 

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (1932)

Rancho Barona Indian Reservation.

 

Granger Music Hall (1896)

1615 E. 4th St. National City. A beautiful place with a strong degree of intactness and perod feel. One of Gill's most intact 19th century buildings (however moved from its original location) Occasional concert series. Nice acoustics. Rentable for wedding receptions recitals and other events for $800/day on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, less otherwise. Mandatory security guard charge. Information at (619) 477-3451

 

The Bishop's Day School (1909)

aka Self Realization Temple/Church . 3068 1st Ave. San Diego Services Sunday 9:30 am and 11am. Thursday 8pm. Book-room Sunday 10:30-11 am, Thursday 9-9:30 pm. Information at (619) 295-1070.

 

 

St. James Chapel (1907)

The Chapel in the 1910's

Now the community hall of the First Baptist Church of La Jolla. Moved and altered in 1920s from Prospect St. to 627 Genter St. (at Draper St., just south of Pearl St.) La Jolla. Service 10:30 am Sunday. "Coffee Time" 10-10:20 am Sunday. Information at (858) 454-9636.

 

Brighton Hotel, Torrance (1913)

Home to 5-Point Jewlery and Loan, a stained glass studio at 1637 Cabrillo Ave. and The Brighton Hotel at 1539 1/2 Cabrillo.

 

Colonial Hotel, Torrance (1913)

Not too much Gill left here. For what its worth, home to Lucio's Mexican Restaurant 1605 Cabrillo Ave, and Frank's Liquor 1601 Cabrillo Ave.

 

Pacific Electric Rail Depot, Torrance (1913)

A bit more architecture than above, but much unfortunate addition. Home to "The Depot" restaurant 1200 Cabrillo Ave. Which seems somewhat promising as an eatery.
