Irving Gill Central
Presents:
The Ronada Court Apartments
Piedmont, California
Since most students
of Irving Gill's architectural work have not had the chance to
visit this beautiful court project (near Oakland) I'll show a
gallery of pictures. Authors Thomas S. Hines and David Gebhard
believe this court project is likely the work of Gill, but even
if it is not it is important for showing what the Lewis Court
(Sierra Madre) project could have been like if only it had been
respected by its owners from the beginning. The Ronada Court is
from 1914 and conceivably could have been a copy of the earlier
Lewis court, as the Lewis project was well known, having been
published in The Craftsman, Architect and Engineer of
California, and Architectural Record, the year or two
before. Being in the presence of this complex gives one the sense
of true architectural mastery.
If anyone has more
information about this, or other possible Irving Gill projects
in Northern California, please share.
